Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
